Miss Ashford brings Volleyball!!

Let me introduce myself, my name is Miss. Ashford and I am working here at West Exe within the PE department while Miss. White is on maternity leave.
While I am here I am looking to introduce the game of volleyball to the students. I will be running a volleyball club on a Thursday after school in the gym.
My background in volleyball all started while I was at secondary school and I have been involved in the game ever since. The highlight of my playing career was during the 2008/2009 season when I was chosen to represent Guernsey against Jersey in the annual inter-insular competition (we won!).
Last season however I turned my hand to coaching and fulfilled the role of Junior Development Officer for the GVA. I was able to work with youngsters of all ages and abilities and really enjoyed the experience.
The game of volleyball allows you to develop new skills and teamwork whilst having fun and meeting new people.

Cycling in Module 5 lessons

As a department we are continually looking for new ways to make your lessons more exciting. Our latest plan is for you to have a chance to do cycling in your lessons. All lessons will be taken by qualified coaches and these lessons are due to start as a trail in Module 5 with the groups listed below.

Module 5 BMX Cycling coaching plan.

Week 1 Week 2

Lesson 1&2 - 9-10.40 7a -Dart (CMD) 1&2 7b – Teign (TN)
Lesson 3&4 - 11-12.40 7b – Exe (NAL) 3&4 9a – Exe (CLG)

Lesson 5&6 - 1.30 -3pm BTEC Yr 11 (RAH) 5&6 BTEC Yr 11 (RAH)

The go ride staff will bring between 12 -15 bikes with them however, if you have your own bike bring it along and you can use it in the lessons.

Cross Country

Congratulations to Regan I. Chloe H. and Amy F. who have all qualified to represent Exeter and District vs East Devon in the Schools Cross Country Champsionship. The next round is currently being rescheduled after the current poor weather. We'll let you know as soon as possible

Extra Curricular Changes

With a new term comes a new extra curricular programme. So check out the latest list of after school activities. These can be found on this Blog and on the PE notice boards. A number of activities have changed days, and others have been replaced. We welcome beginners to experts, so make sure you come along and give them a go. Who knows, you could be our next olympain or world champion.

Gifted and Talented

Well done to our Gifted and Talented students. We have fifty gifted and talented students, who have been recognised for their talent in their chosen activity. These range from gymnastics, football, basketball to water polo, go-karting and motor cross.
A special well done to Amy. C who recently swam for Devon and to the students who appear in the photo who have all represented the county or above in their sport.
We are always looking for new talent, so if you have represented the district or above in any sport, or have had a recent success story we would love to hear all about it.

Fitness Suit Challenges

Year 8, 9, 10 and 11 students have been working really hard in the fitness suit competing to be the best in their year in the following challenges. The 5 minute row, 5 minute run, 5 minute X-trainer, 5 minute cycle and the 100m row. A full list of leaders will be published on this blog at the end of module 3.

BTEC Heroes Help Stranger

Two BTEC students sprang into action after they found a man lying unconcious outside a takeaway on Saturday night! They used their recently acquired skills to administer first aid while the ambulance was on the way. They stayed with the casulaty until the paramedics arrived and were able to brief them on the situation.

Well done Mr Hutchinsons BTEC group!!!!

Cross Country Week

It's been a great start to cross country week with the classes of 8b and 9b leading us off.

First in for the Year 8b boys was Daniel S of KMM with a superb time of 9 minutes 28 seconds. Nikita D also ran well with a time of 14 minutes 27 seconds to come in first for the girls

9b also produced some outstanding results running a longer course. The leading male was Luke B of SPW with a time of 10 minutes 25 seconds. While it was Olivia H who came in first for the girls with the time of 13 minutes 5 seconds.

A full results list will also be up on the PE notice boards once all results have been collected!

First Aid awards for BTEC

24 of our BTEC students have gained a Youth First Aider award from St John's Ambalance. The course took place at West Exe on Tuesday 3rd Nov and Wednesday4th Nov this week.
The course involved students applying theory on CPR, dealing with an unconscious casualty, treatment for injuries and bandaging to scenarios of real life situations and has provided them with life skills for the future.

Mountian Biking at Haldon Forest

A group of students from WETC have just completed an 8 week MTB course at Haldon Forest. They have experienced a range of MTB riding terrains gradually building their confidence and skills and taking on some of the more difficult routes available. The college was lucky to be part of the Exeter Schools Partnership project which has enabled the youngsters to use bikes and safety equipment free of charge for an extra curricular club on Tuesday evenings. Students were volunteered by their form tutors to attend the course with the aim of developing their confidence and social skills. The project has been such a success that further funding has been secured and we will be opening up another course later in the year (when the light returns!) so even more students can benefit. If you think you might be interested then please see Mrs Davies so you can book your place on the next course.

I am also looking to put a MTB team together with the view to competing in some of the school competitions. If you are a keen MTBer and are interested please see CMD.

Year 10's go into combat

The Year 10 BTEC groups are starting an 8 week combat programme as part of their certificate course. During the first 2 sessions they have learnt how to punch, kick and been given some great advice on how to get out of sticky situations, such as run!

Below - Students are put through their paces by the professional coach and ex pupil Ben Cheriton.

Year 7 off to a winning start

Lipson started better and had a early chance and a couple of early corners, after about 10 mins West exe took the lead through Aiden W and double their lead about 5 mins later through a very well taken goal by Samuel C. Lipson pulled a goal back very quickly which they deserved but just before half time Samuel C scored his second to make the score 3 v 1 at half time. West exe started the second on the upper foot and went 4 v 1 up with a good goal from Aiden W. West Exe looked very comfortable but conceded a sloppy goal to make the score 5 v 2 with about 10 minutes to play. West exe made a couple of changes which upset the balance of the team and lipson pulled another goal back to make the score 5 v 3, West exe then scored the best goal of the game with a cushioned header by Samual C that started the move for Aiden W to score his hatrick. Lipson scored their 4th with a penalty in the last minute. Man of the Match Samuel C.

Year 8's continue their good start!

The year 8 boys team continued their successful start to the year with another win and draw in the 7-a-side league. They were unlucky to come away with a draw in the first game after taking a deserved1-0 lead at the end of the first half. Unfortunately a lucky bounce after a well worked move enabled the opposition to draw level and hold out for the draw.

The second game was a real thriller which resulted in a 2-1 win for us with the last kick of the match. After taking the lead the opposition drew level with a great strike. The opposition keeper put in great performance and put in a string of great saves in the final 5 minutes including a penalty save, but with the last kick of the match after some lovely build up play we tucked the ball into the bottom corner to take the deserved win.

5-3 Nation Cup win for year 8 football team

It was a great start to the national cup competition for the year 8 boys. After taking an early 3-0 lead Saltash came back into the game with a couple of well worked goals. However at 3-2Westexe held strong and managed to break away to score making it 4-2. Saltash came back with another goal which left an exciting end to the match until in the last minute when Westexe got the final goal after a well taken free kick given us a 5-3 victory.

Houses pull together at the start of term

It was a great start to the new school year with the inter-house tug-of-war competition. Years 7, 8 and 9 had great battles and showed real pride and determination to win as the pictures below show!

The results table shows the girls as the battle of the sexes winners, with Temple taking the overall house title!

The PE department would like to thank all of the students who took part and are looking forward to the next interhouse competition!
